As the 2008 Olympics near, Beijing officials are trying to clear algae out of the Olympic sailing venue.

Officials say they need at least two weeks to clear an algal bloom threatening Olympic sailing events in the eastern Chinese city of Qingdao.

China's Olympic sailing venue, Qingdao Bay, has been hit by the worst algae blight in living memory, forcing officials to order an emergency clean-up of threatened regatta routes.

China has called in thousands of people to clean up algae, which has overtaken the sailing venue for this summer's Olympic Games.

Jake Deitchler, an 18-year-old from Minnesota unfazed by any deficit or opponent, pulled off two major upsets Saturday to win the U.S. 145.5-pound Greco-Roman trials and become the first high schooler on the Olympic wrestling team in 32 years.

Ilya Kovalchuk scored an overtime power-play goal as Russia rallied to stun Canada 5-4 and end a 15-year gold medal drought at the ice hockey world championship on Sunday.

A senior Chinese official has asked whether Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama would agree to attend the Beijing Olympics to ease recent tensions, a Tibet government-in-exile legislator said on Monday.
